Chelsea remain locked in a bitter dispute with Liverpool over Rio Ngumoha — the 16-year-old prodigy who stunned the Premier League last night by scoring a stoppage-time winner just minutes into his senior debut.
Ngumoha made headlines after netting Liverpool’s dramatic third goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park, becoming the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.
The teenager’s controversial move from Chelsea’s academy to Liverpool last September caused uproar in west London, with Blues officials furious at losing what they described as “a generational talent.”
Despite the transfer being cleared through the Premier League’s official five-step process, Chelsea are still seeking compensation and believe Ngumoha’s sensational debut has only strengthened their case. A final decision on the matter, to be made by a Premier League tribunal, has yet to be reached nearly a year after the move.
Inside Sport previously revealed that Chelsea had reacted to the situation by banning Liverpool youth scouts from attending their academy fixtures.
Ngumoha’s star has been rising rapidly. He was named player of the tournament when Chelsea’s U16s won the national championship in 2023, and since moving to Merseyside, he has continued to impress at every level.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot handed the youngster his debut in the sixth minute of added time last night, and just four minutes later, he delivered — calmly finishing off a Mohamed Salah assist after a clever dummy from Dominik Szoboszlai.
The goal secured a last-gasp win for Liverpool, who had earlier squandered a 2-0 lead against 10-man Newcastle.
Ngumoha turns 17 on Friday. For context, Liverpool were previously ordered to pay around £4.3 million to Fulham in 2019 after signing another academy prospect, Harvey Elliott — a case also resolved by tribunal.
As Ngumoha’s stock continues to rise, so too does the intensity of the ongoing battle between two of England’s biggest clubs.
