Court Stops PDP From Holding 2025 National Convention in Ibadan

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its national convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16.

The convention was set to elect new national officers for the opposition party. However, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, Justice Lifu restrained the PDP from going ahead with the exercise until it complies with its constitution and internal guidelines.

The ruling followed a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who accused the party of denying him the right to purchase a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman.

Justice Lifu held that the PDP acted unlawfully by refusing Lamido the opportunity to participate, stressing that the party is bound to follow its own rules and must give every eligible member a fair chance to pursue their political ambitions.

The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising or monitoring the proposed Ibadan convention until Lamido is allowed to obtain the chairmanship nomination form and take part in the process.

The judge ruled that the planned convention must remain on hold until the PDP fully complies.
