Popular Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, widely known for the emotionally powerful song “Omije Ojumi,” has passed away.

A family source confirmed her death on Tuesday night, though an official statement from the family is yet to be issued. More details surrounding the circumstances of her passing are expected to be released in the coming days.

Her death comes after months of growing concern over her health, during which fans and members of the Christian community repeatedly called for prayers as she struggled with a serious leg-related illness.

In late 2025, a video showing Akinnanu during a prayer session at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, emerged on social media. The footage captured the singer seated with one leg extended while church leaders prayed intensely for her healing.

The video drew widespread attention online, triggering concern and sympathy as many viewers became aware of the severity of her condition.

During the service, the officiating pastor disclosed that Akinnanu had been experiencing persistent bleeding from the affected leg, leading to an emotional moment of intercession among worshippers.

Clips from the service circulated rapidly across social media platforms, sparking nationwide prayer chains and an outpouring of support from fans, fellow gospel artistes, and believers. Despite the heightened public concern at the time, the exact nature of her illness was never formally disclosed.

Akinnanu began her music career at the age of 10 and later made a notable transition from banking to pursue gospel music full-time.

Her decision paid off, earning her national recognition with “Omije Ojumi,” a song that resonated deeply with audiences across Nigeria.

Over the years, she released several other gospel tracks, establishing herself as one of the respected voices in Nigeria’s gospel music scene.
