Israeli Cabinet Set to Vote on Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Deal

Israel’s cabinet is expected to vote Thursday on a landmark agreement with Hamas that could bring an immediate halt to the war in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held in the territory.

The deal, described as the “first phase” of a wider peace framework, was reached after weeks of intense negotiations involving international mediators. If approved, it would see Israel begin pulling back some of its forces within 24 hours. Hamas would then have 72 hours to release hostages in its custody.

In return, Israel is set to free a number of Palestinian prisoners, though the final list is still under negotiation.

The agreement represents the most significant breakthrough since the conflict erupted last year. But questions remain over its implementation. Several right-wing members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition have signaled they may oppose the plan, raising the prospect of political turbulence even as families of the hostages plead for swift approval.

International observers have welcomed the announcement, but warned that the success of the deal hinges on both sides honoring their commitments and on whether the truce can extend into a longer-term arrangement.

If carried out as planned, the ceasefire and first wave of hostage releases could begin within a day of the cabinet’s approval.
