Tinubu Halts Travel After Schoolgirls’ Abduction

From David Okoro

President Bola Tinubu has suspended his planned trip to Johannesburg and Luanda as he awaits comprehensive security reports on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the bandit attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.

The President was expected to depart Abuja today for the G20 Summit in South Africa before heading to Angola for the 7th AU-EU Summit. However, he opted to postpone his departure following fresh security concerns.

Tinubu ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area after the Kwara State governor requested federal intervention. He also directed security agencies to pursue the attackers responsible for Monday’s assault on members of the Christ Apostolic Church.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President is awaiting detailed briefings from Vice President Kashim Shettima—who visited Kebbi on his behalf—along with updates from the police and the Department of State Services on both incidents.

Reaffirming his stance, Tinubu said security agencies must “do everything possible” to rescue the 24 abducted schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.

Reflecting on recent security challenges across the country, the President expressed sadness over the deaths of military personnel and the disruption of education in affected communities. He emphasised his commitment to restoring safety, noting that the actions of terrorists remain “heartless and unacceptable.”
