ABUJA — Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called on Nigeria’s leaders to honour fallen members of the Armed Forces not only with ceremonies, but with leadership that delivers peace, security and shared prosperity.
In a statement issued on Thursday to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Obi said the significance of the annual observance should go beyond wreath-laying and rituals, urging the nation to reflect on its responsibilities to those who paid the ultimate price.
According to him, the most meaningful way to remember fallen soldiers is to build a country that reflects the ideals they died defending.
“Armed Forces Remembrance Day should compel us to recommit ourselves to building a nation worthy of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes,” he said.
Obi noted that the legacy of soldiers who died in service lives on in the lives of the citizens they protected, describing their true resting place as the hearts and minds of the people who enjoyed peace because of their vigilance.
He stressed that leadership anchored on justice, compassion and progress remains the greatest tribute the nation can offer, adding that Nigerians must strive to create a society that gives hope to the hopeless and opportunity to all.
Reflecting on the pain borne by families of deceased servicemen and women, Obi said the day represents more than a public holiday, but a painful reminder of loss.
“For many families, this day marks an empty seat and a silence that can never be replaced,” he said, assuring them that the nation has not forgotten the sacrifices of their loved ones.
He added that while nothing can fully compensate for such losses, Nigeria must ensure that the courage and dedication of its fallen heroes were not in vain.
