The Kano State government says it is close to resolving the long-running dispute over the leadership of the Kano Emirate. The assurance came on Thursday from Ibrahim Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, during a media briefing in Kano.
The conflict stems from a series of leadership changes and legal battles involving the two rival claimants to the throne Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero. Sanusi was initially installed as emir during Rabiu Kwankwaso’s tenure as governor but was removed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who later appointed Bayero and expanded the traditional structure by creating four additional first-class emirates.
In May 2024, Governor Abba Yusuf reversed those decisions, scrapping the emirates created under Ganduje through the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. The move reinstated Sanusi II and removed Bayero from the position. Bayero, however, rejected the directive and maintained his claim to the throne, leading to a deadlock between the supporters of both figures.
The disagreement has played out in courts, where judges have issued contradictory rulings—some recognising Sanusi II as the lawful emir, others supporting Bayero. The tension has spilled into the streets, prompting protests and drawing political interest from both state and federal actors.
Bayero is believed to enjoy backing from at least one federal official, while Governor Yusuf remains aligned with Sanusi II.
Responding to questions from journalists, Waiya said the state government had already taken steps to calm the situation and was committed to a peaceful resolution. He noted that the administration would continue mediating with relevant stakeholders and insisted that the issue must not be allowed to hinder governance or disrupt public order.
He emphasised that the government’s efforts would remain anchored in the rule of law, respect for traditional institutions, and the broader interests of Kano residents.
Waiya also addressed Governor Yusuf’s recent move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the switch as a strategic decision that he believes will position the state to benefit more from federal programmes and development initiatives.
According to him, closer cooperation with the Federal Government is expected to open opportunities for improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social services.
“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, we expect more support in critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare,” he said.
The commissioner urged residents to remain patient and supportive, saying the administration remained focused on stability, inclusiveness, and progress. He reaffirmed the government’s promise to prioritise transparency and the welfare of the people throughout the process of resolving the emirate crisis.
