Atiku Names Kenneth Okonkwo as Campaign Spokesperson for 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson.

The actor-turned-politician disclosed the appointment on Thursday in a post on his official X account, where he thanked Atiku for entrusting him with the role.

Okonkwo said he was grateful to God and appreciated the confidence the former vice president had placed in him by assigning him the responsibility.

Speaking on the appointment, he described Atiku as a leader who encourages consultation and constructive engagement, rather than allowing disagreements with political associates to create lasting divisions.

He also revealed that discussions with Atiku and senior members of the ADC focused on the political interests of the South-East, noting that the region’s concerns were considered within the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the country’s current political realities.

Okonkwo expressed appreciation to Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their efforts in strengthening the party as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

He equally thanked his family, supporters and well-wishers for their encouragement and prayers, while asking for continued support as he takes on his new assignment.

The appointment follows recent criticism by Okonkwo over the party’s vice-presidential selection process. He had argued that choosing a running mate from the South-South would further marginalise the South-East, a region that has not produced either Nigeria’s president or vice president since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Despite those reservations, the ADC later announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate after the former vice president emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
