SAM NKIRE ON SUNDAY

THERE’S POWER IN A MOTHER’S (WIFE’S) PRAYER.

*Christian mothers and wives are expected to always pray for their children and husbands, as God is favourably disposed to answering their prayers.

*One of the most celebrated cases where a mother prayed for a child was that of Hannah, the wife of Elkanah who prayed so fervently and in anguish. God answered Hannah with the birth of Samuel who she dedicated back to God. Hannah could not have wanted the child so badly to please God alone but also her husband, Elkanah (1 Samuel 1 to end).

*Another story about the potency of a mother’s prayer was the case of Hager whose prayer God answered when her son Ishmael was about to die of taste in the wilderness. God miraculously provided them, Hager and Ishmael a well full of water, in order for mother and child to survive (Genesis 21:14-19).

*Yet, another case of a praying mother, was that of a Syrophoenician woman whose daughter was demon-possessed. Jesus healed the girl and called her mother “a woman of great faith” (Matthew 15:21-28).

*The prayer of the mother or wife is not only powerful when it comes to her children, God answers the prayer of the praying mother or wife for everyone in the family, including her husband.

*In 1964, while this writer was in Primary Four, his father, who was a pastor, got very ill after a meal of roasted yam. There was no hospital and no doctor nearby. As one would expect, the atmosphere became very tense within the family.

*Suddenly, I heard my mother say to everyone in the room: “let us all start praying, this is all there is to do; I know nothing else” (anyi kpewa nu ekpere, odighi whe odo mmara la abughi ekpere).

*My father died in 1997 at the age of 85, 33 years after the roasted yam scare ! The praying mother and wife, my mother, painfully passed on two years before.
