Nigeria 4–1 Gabon (AET): Super Eagles Soar After Late Scare.

By Marcus Nkire

Nigeria booked their place in the World Cup qualifying playoff final after a thrilling 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Rabat on Thursday night, a game that went from nervy to electric in a heartbeat.

The Super Eagles started brightly but wasted a handful of early chances, with Victor Osimhen coming close twice in the opening 20 minutes. Gabon, disciplined and compact, absorbed the pressure while threatening occasionally on the counter.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th minute when Akor Adams pounced on a defensive error to slot Nigeria ahead, sending the travelling fans into rapture. But the joy was short-lived. Just as the clock ticked down, Mario Lemina’s deflected effort found the back of the net in the 89th minute, dragging the contest into extra time.

That equalizer appeared to jolt Nigeria back to life. In extra time, the Super Eagles rediscovered their bite and rhythm.

Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in the 97th minute with a composed finish after a slick team move, before Osimhen turned the screw with a quick brace in the 102nd and 110th minutes — his trademark blend of aggression and precision sealing the rout.

By the final whistle, Nigeria had transformed what once looked like a stalemate into a statement win. It was a performance that started in frustration but ended in dominance, with the Super Eagles now just one step away from a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Coach Finidi George praised his players for their resilience, saying, “We stayed patient, stayed hungry, and when it mattered most, we showed what Nigerian football is all about — character and class.”Gabon’s late collapse told its own story.

The Panthers fought bravely for 90 minutes but were outpaced and outmuscled in extra time, their defensive shape unraveling under the weight of Nigerian pressure. With this victory, Nigeria move closer to reclaiming their place on football’s grandest stage. For the Super Eagles, the flight path is clear — and the wings are wide open.
