A major crisis erupted on Tuesday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja as rival factions clashed, prompting a tense standoff and the use of tear gas.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were initially blocked from entering the secretariat after encountering padlocked gates, forcing them to walk into the compound.
Efforts to access the National Executive Committee (NEC) hall were met with violence when supporters of one faction deployed tear gas, resulting in chaos that affected journalists, party members, and bystanders.
At around 11:15 a.m., Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, arrived and reportedly positioned his vehicle to block the governors’ motorcade, further escalating tensions. A senior police officer later intervened, instructing the governors to vacate the premises, but Governor Mohammed insisted they would leave only if Wike also exited, describing the space as a “party space, not a private arena.”
The confrontation follows reports that Wike and several others were expelled from the PDP by the Bala-led faction during a recent meeting in Ibadan. As of filing, both governors and several party members remained inside the secretariat, while Wike stayed in his vehicle in front of the building.
