Abuja, Nigeria – A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges.
Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty on all counts, including incitement and instructing violent acts, with some sentences running concurrently. The judge opted for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty, citing legal and moral considerations.
The ruling drew mixed reactions: the Federal Government hailed it as upholding the rule of law, while some Igbo leaders and civil society groups condemned it as biased. Kanu’s legal team has confirmed they will appeal.
