The All Progressives Congress (APC) has halted its planned ward, local government, and state congresses in Abia State indefinitely, amid increasing political chatter surrounding a possible defection by Governor Alex Otti.
The party conveyed the decision in a letter dated February 18, 2026, addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The document was jointly signed by the APC National Chairman, Professor Mentawe Goshwe Yilwatida, and the National Secretary, Senator Nurujudeen Ajibola Bashiru.
According to the correspondence, the congresses previously outlined in the party’s official timetable, that it has been postponed without a new date. The leadership explained that the move followed ongoing internal consultations and the need to complete certain preparations before proceeding.
The party indicated that additional administrative and organizational steps must be concluded to guarantee a smooth, transparent, and credible exercise. It emphasized that the suspension is part of standard procedure aimed at protecting the integrity of its internal electoral process.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed that INEC had been duly notified in line with legal requirements. He added that a revised schedule would be announced once consultations are finalized.
The development comes against a backdrop of heightened political activity in Abia State, where speculation about potential shifts within the political space has been gaining traction. Although the APC did not directly connect the postponement to any defection claims, the timing has intensified discussions about possible strategic moves ahead of upcoming elections.
Party members and stakeholders in the state are now awaiting further guidance from the national leadership as consultations continue.
