UK Restates Visa Requirement for Nigerians, Other Foreign Nationals
The United Kingdom has reiterated that Nigerians seeking to visit the country for up to six months must obtain a visa before travelling, in line with its existing immigration regulations covering nationals from more than 100 countries and territories.
The reminder follows an update to the UK’s Visitor Immigration Rules, which continue to classify Nigeria as a visa-required country for short-term travel, including tourism, family visits, business meetings and other temporary purposes.
The revised guidance also makes clear that stateless individuals and travellers using documents other than a national passport or, where applicable, a recognised national identity card, are required to obtain entry clearance before departure unless the travel document was issued by the UK. It also retains limited exemptions for certain travellers from China and Taiwan.
Nigeria joins several African countries—including Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Uganda and Zimbabwe—on the visa-required list, alongside numerous nations across Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. British authorities said the updated guidance reinforces current travel requirements rather than introducing new restrictions.
