Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the North should not be seen as the region that must always produce Nigeria’s president.
Speaking during an interview on News Central Television, Kwankwaso said his decision to run alongside a presidential candidate from the South reflects his belief in fairness, justice and balanced national leadership.
He argued that the idea that political power should permanently remain in the North does not represent the views of everyone in the region.
According to him, his acceptance of the vice-presidential slot under a Southern candidate demonstrates the North’s commitment to equity and mutual respect between both regions of the country.
Kwankwaso maintained that the principles of fairness and justice have consistently guided his political position on power-sharing between the North and the South.
His remarks come as the NDC prepares for the 2027 presidential election, with Peter Obi flying the party’s presidential ticket and Kwankwaso serving as his running mate.
The former Kano State governor had, however, taken a different position ahead of the 2023 general election when he declined an offer to become Obi’s running mate. At the time, he said the political mood in the North favoured retaining the presidency in the region following the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-term administration.
